good morning and welcome to "early start." i'm michaela. >> i'm john berman. it is tuesday, july 9th. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. the three women held captive in a cleveland house now speak. for the first time, we are seeing and hearing amanda, gina and michelle. in a video released by their pr firm, they talk about their strength and thank the people in cleveland and around the world for their support. >> i want everyone to know how happy i have been with family and friends. itis been unbelievable. i want to thank everyone who's helped me through this ordeal. >> if you could say something to each and every person who contributed money to help you, what would you say to them? >> thank you for support. >> i may have been through hell

and back, but i am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face and with my head held high. >> such grace, such poise and hope. their captor is in jail right now. he's set to go on trial in august. prosecutors say he kidnapped the women, beat and raped them and fathered a child with one of them over the course of the last decade. now into the investigation of the crash of asiana airlines flight 214. officials are interviewing the cockpit crew. there were four pilots on board the boeing 777 and a flight crew. they are focusing on the speed as it came in for a landing which was low and too slow. there eesz dramatic video. you can see the planes emergency chutes being deployed as smoke

engulfs the wreckage. we have the latest on the investigation. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, michaela. we do not believe the interviews have been completed yet because the pilot's main language is korean. they have a lot of investigators in the room talking to him at the same time. they want to know everything the pilots were doing days leading up to the time they were in the cockpit, what they were seeing as they were coming in, all of this as the new video shows a textbook escape. what we hope to understand later this afternoon, michaela is that the ntsb should give us more information on what the pilots are saying to them. they want to look at everything over the last 72 hours leading

up to that flight. they want to know what their sleep schedules were, how they were feeling, their health. they want to look at everything that happened in that cockpit. they want to look specifically at what that plane was doing as it was coming in. they say it was on a normal glide path all the way into san francisco airport. 82 seconds before that plane hit the embankment here, the pilot disengaged the auto pilot. there was a slow and normal decent into the airport but as it got closer and closer, the speed dropped dangerously and right before impact, it was doing about 118 miles per hour. it should have been doing about 158 miles per hour. the pilot at the very last minute began to add thrust to those engines. when that plane hit the tarmac, it was actually increasing

speed, but it certainly was not enough. michaela? >> back to the pilots, as you were mentioning, the importance of talking to them about those 72 hours was to say were they fatigued, were they using caffeine or alcohol in that time? they want to know all their behaviors up to that time to see if they were in a good position to land the plane in the most effective manner possible. >> there have been three interviews up to now. law enforcement talked to them on day one. they may have tested for drugs or alcohol in the system. south korean officials interviewed them on day two. now the big interview with ntsb, other investigators looking at the pilots. ntsb quick to point out, don't look at pilot error too quick, yet. there have been three similar

crashes where planes landed short of the runway. in some cases, there was pilot error involved. in others, it was mechanical. they want to know everything before they make judgments about this. there's a lot of information out there to collect before they have a very clear idea of what happened here. michaela? >> certainly, the pilots, the instruments. we'll be following this. thank you for the report from san francisco. three teenagers on board flight 214 are talking exclusively to cnn about their ordeal. 11-year-old sarah, her 11-year-old joseph and 15-year-old sister talked from san francisco general hospital. they talk about what happened after the planes crash landed. >> craziness. it was like we were all bouncing all over the place. i just remember there being dust everywhere. i was freaking out. then it just stopped.

after everything stopped, relief. >> the three teens suffered just minor injuries. there's much more of the interview with the three young passengers coming up later on "new day." the chaos in egypt where they argue who was responsible for the shooting outside the republican gart headquarters. more than 50 dead and hundreds injured. did the military open fire without warning or was it stopping a terrorist attack? the interim president is launching an investigation. at the same time, launching a timetable for new elections. reza is live for us in cairo. >> reporter: every day seems to be another round of this fight in this conflict. we have the liberals, moderates, supporters of military rule who want to push forward with a new government. they seem to be winning. on the other side, you have

morsi and the muslim brotherhood. they are outraged, screaming for this process to be stopped and it's still not clear who fired first, who started the clashes. there's all sorts of conflicting reports. yesterday, the police held a news conference saying it was an armed terrorist group. they showed video, showing protesters firing on to troops. you have supporters of the muslim brotherhood, the ousted president who say no, it wasn't us. it was troops who fire first. they have their own video showing soldiers firing on to protesters. in the meantime, we are expecting funerals today for the fatalities. in the meantime, the interim president is pushing forth with establishing a new government. last night, he declared a constitutional decree. there's going to be a panel to

reknew the constitution. in four and a half months, if it goes smoothly, we could have a nationwide vote for a constitution. shortly there after, parliamentary elections. you have to wonder, what's going through the minds of the supporter, morsi, the muslim brotherhood. a week ago, their president was in place. egypt is on its way to establishing a new government. this conflict is far from over. michaela? >> a plan in place is good, reality is different. we'll be watching. thank you. now to the death toll from the run away train explosion in a canadian town near the border. the death toll stands at 13, more than three dozen people remain unaccounted for. the 73-car train loaded with crude oil exploded and destroyed the downtown area in quebec over the weekend. an engine shutdown may have caused the brakes to fail

sending the cars careening for miles into the town. could edward snowden be heading to venezuela? the president says his government received a letter from snowden asking for refuge days after they sent an offer to him. it's up to snowden to get himself to venezuela. for now, he's holed up at the moscow airport. with a deadline looming to wind down the war in afghanistan, an official tells cnn president obama is considering pulling off troops from that country in 2014. the white house apparently growing frustrated with hamid karzai. it may be a negotiating tactic. they are trying to work out a long term deal to keep some u.s. service members on the ground after the draw down. the wife of secretary of state john kerry is said to be doing better. a source close to the family

tells cnn, 74-year-old has symptoms consistent with a seizure. her condition is upgraded to fair. they hope to have good news to report today. the latest white house projection says the deficit will shrink by $214 billion. of course it won't be gone completely, washington is spending about $1 trillion more than it takes in. spending cuts are paying off. >> what is three quarters of a trillion dollars? >> pocket change. >> check this out. this is in tron corontotoronto,. >> that's a road? >> i'm sure it's a road completely under water. nearly four inches fell in just hours. 100,000 customers are without

medic who heard people scream for help to determine the voice on the 911 call was george zimmerman. that set the stage for tracy martin, trayvon martin's father. two investigators say martin told him no, the voice screaming was not his son. then they put martin on the stand. >> i didn't tell them that wasn't trayvon. i kind of pushed away from the table and just kind of shook my head and said i can't tell. >> so your words were, i can't tell? >> something to that effect. i never said that wasn't my son's voice. >> defense attorneys also called up the owner of the gym where zimmerman trained to lose weight to demonstrate how he could hold someone down. he got on top of mark o'mara.

bernanke. stocks did finish higher on monday. the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 all closed in the black. the s&p 500 has risen four out of the five sessions. dell closed 3% higher after the company ceo founder offered to take the company private in a more than $24 billion deal. that got a show of support from a critical group, the largest shareholder advisory firm. we'll see how that fares. meantime, the ceo of barnes & noble resigned late yesterday following disappointling showing for the nook. that's their e-reader that has been trying to compete. his name is william lynch. he stepped down after three years at the helm of the company. he reported a quarterly loss of more than $118 million. it's twice the loss from a year

ago. sales of the nook fell 34% in the most recent quarter. company shares down 4% on that news. meantime, oracle warren buffett giving away $2 billion in stock going to the gates foundation. he's donating 17.5 million class b shares of berkshire hathaway. they do a number of things focused on alleviating global poverty. back in 2006, buffett signed the giving pledge along with bill and melinda gates and billionaires promising to give away half of their wealth in their lifetime or after their death. buffett is going to give away all of his shares in berkshire hathaway. >> thanks. >> we'll be right back. my name is mike and i quit smoking.

their captor is in jail on kidnapping and rape. he fathered a girl with one of the women. his trial is set to begin in august. investigators zero in on what caused asiana airlines to crash at the san francisco airport. we are hearing for the first time from the emergency responders who climbed into the fuselage to save lives. two people died in the crash. more than 300 survived. gary tuckman spoke with two firefighters among the first on the scene. >> reporter: it was only seconds after asiana flight 214 hit the seawall at san francisco airport that this firefighter found out about it. >> alert three. alert three, plane crash, plane crash. >> reporter: their based at the airport. >> how quickly did you get to the sight of the crash?

>> from the time it came in, i would say a minute, less than a minute. >> we were quick to the scene. >> they were the first first responders to board the boeing 777. >> we climbed up the chute that deployed. >> we extinguished the fire inside. we conducted a search and worked backwards. the remaining passengers were in the back of the aircraft. >> it was a chaotic situation. it was not as neat as the front of the plane. >> reporter: both san francisco firefighters saw four passengers trapped in the back of the plane. >> why weren't they a able to get out. >> one was going in and out of conscious. the other stunned and groaning. another had multiple fractures in their leg. one passenger was trapped under, i think an overhead bin collapsed on her.

there was a fifth person lying flat. >> she was moaning. there were sounds coming from her. the language, you know, everybody there was, in my mind critical and we needed to get off that plane. >> we brought her out and started carrying the others out. >> reporter: meanwhile, the situation was getting more dangerous on the plane. >> we saw the black smoke coming toward us. we had to get the last passenger off. we grabbed and ran. not ran, but hurried out of there. >> reporter: how concerned were you of being in danger of getting out of there? >> i didn't think of that. my concern was to get the passengers off the plane. it's all i thought about. >> reporter: if you wouldn't have worked that quickly, they may not have survived. >> right. >> you saved their lives? >> yes. >> the first responders were not

the only heroes here. flight attendants were also being hailed at their role for getting passengers to safety. one was the cabin manager. she was the very last person to leave the burning plane. she tried to put out fires while ushering passengers off the plane. she suffered a broken tailbone in the crash and still helped everyone. >> it's amazing. they are there for our safety. there were in that incident. funerals begin in egypt for the more than 50 people killed outside the republican guard headquarters. the military blaming terrorists for the shooting. supporters of morsi say government forces opened fire without warning injuring hundreds. the interim president is launching an investigation as he set as timetable for the new elections. presidential vote in february. mansour gave himself limited

power to make new laws. congress is no closer to fixing the sudden jump in student loan rates. rates doubled to 6.8% on july 1st after they could not work out a deal. they are not closer to reaching one now. house speaker john boehner blamed the senate. senate democratic leader harry reid blamed boehner and the house republicans. way to go, guys. is rick perry going for a run, again? he said he will not lead the lone star state after 14 years in the role. he wouldn't talk about the future. by leaving in 2014, it leaves him plenty of time to mount a run for the white house. he had to give up his presidential campaign in 2012 after a less than stellar showing in iowa and new hampshire. >> this time it would be more carefully planned. the house is set to vote on

country star, randy travis in critical condition in a texas hospital being treated for a viral infection in his heart. the 54-year-old singer was hit by viral cardiomiopathy on sunday. he was feeling fine earlier in the weekend. it's not clear what caused this infection. mariah carey on the mend. she injured herself in a video shoot. she dislocated her shoulder over the weekend. she had to go to the hospital.
